SWARTLAND WINE & OLIVE ROUTE

Discover the secrets of the Swartland

The Swartland Wine & Olive Route is not just a destination, it is a gateway to a world of wide-open spaces, endless blue skies, and warm and welcoming locals. With a rich history dating back to the early 1700s, this region is steeped in heritage and charm. Take a stroll through the local villages and discover the heritage routes and historic buildings that shed the light of stories past.

The Swartland, an hour north of Cape Town, gets its name from the indigenous rhinoceros bush that blackens in summer. With a low-key charm compared to its better-known counterparts, it has risen to fame for its exceptional old-vine Chenin Blanc and a vibrant community of independent winemakers crafting innovative natural wines, including textured Chenin Blancs, Rhône and Shiraz varietals, just in case you needed further reason to top up your glass whilst exploring this humble but ever-rising wine region.

Big name winemakers are no strangers to the allure of this special place, add to that- ultra hot summer conditions and freedom from pests, and you’ll soon see why the Swartland is an ideal haven for natural winemaking, something that’s as enticing to the likes of Sadies, Badenhorst’s and the Mullineux’s, as it is to the newcomers to the valley, of which there are many.  For lovers of the great outdoors, the Swartland Wine & Olive Route offers an abundance of activities to indulge in. Lace up your hiking boots and explore the picturesque trails that wind through the rolling farm lands and nature reserves. Feel the thrill as you conquer the rugged terrain on a mountain bike adventure, taking in the breathtaking scenery along the route. For those with an artistic streak, there’s no shortage of creativity here either – with a wealth of inspiration available at every turn- immerse yourself in the vibrant local art scene by browsing through the numerous art galleries and local craft shops. From paintings and sculptures to unique handmade crafts, take home trinkets and new-found treasures are sure to captivate every art lover.

Amidst rolling golden hills and vineyard vistas, the Swartland has undoubtedly become a choice weekend escape for Capetonians. In the quaint town of Riebeek Kasteel, beautifully restored Victorian buildings house art galleries and antique shops, while specialty stores offer a taste of the region’s acclaimed wines and olive oils, making it a delightful culinary haven. Many of the esteemed wine producers of the region, have expanded their crops to include olives- allowing you to indulge in a wine tasting experience like no other, as you sample the finest wines and liquid gold of the Swartland. We’re talking about the extra virgin olive oils and the Chenin Blancs, of course…Be sure to stock up with a bottle or two as the ideal memento of your journey.
