Savour the spoils of SA’s favourite resort town: Plettenberg Bay awaits!
Plettenberg Bay has long-since been an all-time favourite for all those in search of sunshine, unspoiled nature, beautiful beaches and a lifestyle that’s hard to beat. A lifestyle so hard to beat in fact, that the slogan assigned to Plett has also become every visitor’s mantra: ‘Plett, it’s a feeling.’
Located on the Southern Cape coast of South Africa, it’s a town affectionately referred to as ‘Plett’ by locals, but was originally known as ‘Bahia Formosa’ translated to ‘beautiful bay’ by the early Portuguese explorers. Thanks to a year-round temperate climate, expansive golden beaches, majestic forests, captivating lagoons and estuaries and pristine nature, it’s easily accessible for a variety of outdoor pursuits – it’s no wonder that this destination pulls the crowds.
Most importantly in our books though, it’s home to some seriously great wine and a thriving local wine route. Offering a delightful journey through South Africa’s smallest wine-growing region, The Plettenberg Bay wine route spans 18 wine farms and 57 kilometres along the picturesque coastal strip, showcasing some of the country’s most easterly cultivars. Visitors can an easily access the local route, exploring charming wineries where you’ll no doubt be greeted with a warm welcome. Indulge in leisurely afternoons of guided wine tastings and delectable nibbles, enhanced only by the views and the ‘kick-off-your-shoes-and-feel-at-home’ undercurrent to it all.
With no shortage of ways to keep busy while on holiday, Plett caters to both the thrill-seekers and those seeking a little quality R&R. The gourmands are also in for a treat with no shortage of exceptional local restaurants and eateries, as well as a lively town centre – begging to be explored on foot.
The first grapes in the area were planted by Bramon Wine Estate in the Crags, back in 2000. The property had the soils, slope, and climate for wine. Others followed, and although today it seems every second farm along this thin coastal strip is growing grapes, there are only ten producing farms that bottle their own wine.
