We like to think that our journey, and anybody else’s journey, is reflected in that of our grapes.
From the vine to the wine, there’s potential, growth, change, and ultimately, hopefully, something very special. And even then, there’s a sense of mystery and possibility, depending on when and how you enjoy it, and who with.
Maybe it’s just us, but our feeling is that wine is very much like life.
We believe that small is special. We know and nurture each vine. We use organic fertilisers and recycled grey water. We pay meticulous attention to detail. And because we prioritise quality over quantity, we don’t cut costs, even taking the unusual step of using netting over our vines, which results in unusually good grapes: they’re some of the most unblemished any farmer is ever likely to see, and they’re put to good use by our award-winning winemaker, Anton Smal.

Pinot Cottage and Polo Cottage at Newstead.

Some places, you feel renewed and re-energised the moment you arrive. That’s what we’ve tried to create at our two guest suites.

The old farm house has been renovated into two private guest suites, Pinot Cottage and Polo Cottage, each sleeping two people. They are located on our Pinot Noir vineyards. Not a stone’s throw away, not a short walk. On. And if that doesn’t already fill you with serenity and contentment, then our adjoining paddocks add to the sense of openness.

That openness extends inside the cottages, too. At around 50sqm, they are spacious, airy and light. Warmly uncluttered. And luxuriously understated. Expect oversized chairs. Indulge in cloud-soft beds with velvet-buttoned headboards and high thread-count linen.

It’s a place for simple but elegant pleasures. Inhale the tranquillity. Settle in with a good book from our small collection. Enjoy morning tea brewed in a silver pot, or discerningly selected coffee drunk on the veranda. Share leisurely sundowners overlooking the vineyards or under the nearby pear tree. Bliss out under the private outdoor shower. Relax next to a cosy winter fire. Reinvigorate in the soon-to-be-built pool.

With all kitchen essentials, you may self-cater as much or as little as you please. You also have the option of ordering a picnic from the estate or a enjoying an all-too-rare slow lunch at the restaurant.

You may be on honeymoon, on a polo vacation, or on a much-needed break from the city. You may come for a weekend or for a month. The gear-change down to calm is immediate. And it only gets better from there."

"Our tasting room is very much the way we hope people will think of our farm: welcoming, authentic, intimate. It’s a place we want visitors to be able to relax and linger. Like a home, it will evolve, change, and hopefully surprise, depending on the time of day or year.

We don’t have restaurant-like formalities, but our foods are guided by the season, inspired by the moment, and made from scratch using ingredients that are locally-sourced (often as local as our own vegetable, herb and flower garden) and always fresh, simple and delicious. We pay meticulous attention to detail in our vineyards of Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. They produce some of the best, most unblemished grapes any farmer is ever likely to see, and they’re put to good use by our winemaker.

From our first vintage in 2012, our wines and bubblies received both acclaim and awards, and they’re enjoyed as much in the Europe as they are here in Plettenberg Bay."
