Since 1923 Johan Abraham van Zyl and his wife, Wilhelmina, started to develop the rugged terrain of the Piekenierskloof mountain ridge. Today the fourth generation of van Zyl’s celebrates their heritage with unique wines made from meticulously farmed and lovingly managed vines, some more than 60 years old. Fondly dubbed the ‘Grenache HQ’ amongst wine lovers, the Piekenierskloof not only boasts one of the largest Grenache plantings in the Cape, but its extensive collection of old, unirrigated bush vine vineyards have stood the test of time and continuously deliver exceptional wines.

Nestled along the N7 on the Piekenierskloof Pass, you’ll come across a historic piece of land known as ‘De Tol’, which is now home to, amongst others, the Piekenierskloof Wines Tasting Room.
Since 1849 De Tol has acted as a supply station and pitstop to travellers. Today the premises is a hub of honest food, exciting pairing experiences, quality artisanal products, an excellent Piekenierskloof Wines wine selection and teas from Carmien Tea. Guests are offered a variety of experiences so that they can take home a taste of the Piekenierskloof.
