Elgin Valley Wine Route
Oak Valley Estate was founded in 1898 by Sir Antonie Viljoen, whose accomplishments include the establishment of the first commercial apple orchards in the Elgin Valley. He also established the farm's wine grape production. The cellar was built in 1907, but the wine sold as bulk. The quota system forced a decline of the wine business under his descendants until the 1980s when Oak Valley was chosen for state-sponsored testing of new cultivars. The project ended in 1992, but Oak Valley expanded its vineyard project and continued to sell grapes until 2002 when it established its own label. It has been farmed by Anthony Rawbone-Viljoen since 1973.
