WINE ROUTES

MIDLANDS MEANDER ROUTE

Endless green hills and wine on the menu

A full tank and trusty Google maps at the ready are the only prerequisites needed for a road trip along the Midlands Meander, a route that promises no shortage of foodie stops, craft shops, leather works and plenty of opportunities for a thirst-quenching pit stop.

The KwaZulu-Natal Midlands, extending all the way from the Mooi River to the Drakensberg foothills, is a captivating oasis awaiting exploration. The region boasts diverse climates, distinct from the coastal areas, transforming with burnt  orange and yellow hues during the autumn and winter months, while spring and summer adorn the rolling hillsides with vibrant wildflowers.

The Midlands, renowned for its lush farmlands, meandering streams, and cascading waterfalls like Howick, Woodhouse and Karkloof, offers an ideal backdrop for an array of outdoor activities sure to keep the active traveller smiling from ear-to-ear – from horse riding and hiking to quad biking, thrilling canopy tours and trout fishing- this picturesque setting does not disappoint. Perhaps the greatest discovery you’ll make along route unfolds in the three wineries that hog prime positioning along this route.

These three ‘pin drops’ on the map constitute our most ‘boutique’ and informal wine route in South Africa, stretching across 120 kilometers and concluding in the Central Drakensberg- making for an ideal weekend self-drive adventure or a slow meander through this verdant landscape. Sip on an award-winning Viognier as you soak in the views of vineyard covered mountain slopes and enjoy a homely-welcome while being entertained with stories of simple but restorative country life, with passion evident in every tale and tasting.

The three wineries offer an array of styles of wine, although the production remains relatively small, the common thread lies in their commitment to the utmost in quality, speaking to the region’s potential for quality wines. Cathedral Peak Wines in the Central Drakensberg, Highgate and the oldest of the trio, Abingdon Estate, in Lions River proudly shape the wine scene along this ever-popular tourist drawcard. Although there are surprizes at every turn, be assured you will be made to feel more than welcome along the Midlands Meander Route, as you soak in the unique blend of natural beauty and
burgeoning wine culture.
