Schenkfontein, a family-owned private cellar near Piketberg in the Swartland, was established on 9 December 1992, when Hennie Hanekom purchased a portion of the old Winkelshoek family farm, known as Winkelshoek Portion C. Initially, the land was not intended for vine cultivation or winemaking. Several months later, it was named Schenkfontein.
The farm spans about 153 hectares, with only 23 hectares dedicated to vineyards. The rest consists of shallow clay soil and mountainous terrain, with soil types ranging from sandy/clay to stone and clay.
Water stored in mountain ravine dams during winter sustains the vineyards in summer. In these ideal conditions, our winemaker Hendrik Hanekom; produced the first certified wines under the Schenkfontein label in 2014, using some of his grandfather Hennie's traditional recipes. Hendrik's wines are known for being easy-drinking.
The farm opened its tasting room in 2019. Due to the location of the cellar and tasting room, it will only be open to the public once a month, on a Saturday. Bookings are essential.
We look forward to sharing our wine with you.
