Vergenoegd Löw The Wine Estate

Description

At the gateway to Stellenbosch lies Vergenoegd Löw The Wine Estate, a special place bathed in serenity, heritage and natural beauty. Only 30 minutes’ drive from Cape Town, it offers an immediate escape into country peace and calm. You can hear the birds as they gather at the vlei, the susurration of the leaves in the indigenous gardens, the Indian Runner ducks as they waddle off to work and the occasional lowing of cows. A herd of Dexter cattle, like the ducks, takes care of weeds and fertilises the soils.

The mixed farming estate, just 5kms from False Bay, operates according to regenerative agricultural principles to keep soils healthy, promote biodiversity and capture carbon.

Visitors are so captivated by the extensive gardens, the walking trails, the outdoor artworks by the acclaimed Dylan Lewis and Manuela Holzer, the finely restored 18th century Cape Dutch buildings and two restaurants, it’s sometimes hard to remember this is as much an agricultural enterprise as it is an enclave of luxury.

The estate offers high-end boutique accommodation with spectacular views. Each suite has been individually appointed with the accent on comfort, ease and privacy. For those looking for some self-spoiling, there’s a superb spa.

There are fine wines, many of them award-winning as young winemaker Vusi Dalicuba makes his mark. Elegant and restrained, they shine when paired with dishes at Geuwels, a casual eatery for breakfast and lunch, and the more formal Clara’s Barn. At both, Bertus Basson and Drikus Basson have given local culinary traditions an exciting reinterpretation.

Guests can also sample wines at the 1773 Homestead Wine Lounge.

Visit Vergenoegd Löw for a distillation of understated but world-class sophistication.

Description
Step into this luxurious, heritage country retreat and be transported to another cosmos. Broad, unspoiled skies, tinged with the salt of the nearby sea, soaring birds and aromatic indigenous flora and the shielding presence of massive, undulating mountains. In a word: a universe all its own. Contained and cocooned.

The Vergenoegd Löw Boutique Hotel & Spa, a member of the prestige portfolio of the European Heritage Project of historic, luxury country estates, is very protective of that tranquillity. Each of its individually appointed suites nestles in its own peaceful, private quietude.

The accent is on detailed, thoughtful comfort and convenience. Capacious beds and fine-textured linens and soft furnishings; log fires in autumn and winter; floor-to-ceiling fenestration to feel close to nature in all seasons and to make the most of the mountain and vineyard views.

The exclusive accommodation is inspired by the farm’s classic 18th century Cape Dutch buildings, all sensitively restored for historic authenticity but repurposed for contemporary comfort.

Enjoy the luxury spa; a gym/yoga room; trails to walk or run; a puzzle maze and labyrinth; meandering gardens punctuated by bronze sculptures by leading local artists like the internationally celebrated Dylan Lewis; and a variety of wine-tasting options plus two terrific restaurants serving contemporary Cape cuisine.

Restaurant

Description
Renowned chef Bertus Basson and fellow Stellenbosch chef, Drikus Brink have conceived two different restaurants on Vergenoegd Löw:

Geuwels (Gables) is a casual eatery serving farm-style breakfasts and lunches daily. Lunches showcase local ingredients in small-plate dishes to share. These are familiar, well-loved tastes amongst most South Africans, but they have been reimagined in original new ways.

Clara’s Barn is housed in what in all probability is the oldest building on the farm. For authenticity and to reflect this part of its history, the cobble-stoned floors and animal feeding troughs have been retained. The restaurant, that reinterprets traditional dishes from South African farm kitchens, offers a daily five-course, fine-dining set menu featuring fresh produce from the farm or supplied by small-scale farmers. Vergenoegd Löw, other wines and even non-alcoholic cocktails can be paired with each course as recommended by the sommelier. Clara’s Barn also has a special wing set up for small-scale events and can take up to 80 people.

Both restaurants feature spacious patios, allowing guests to make the most of the glorious mountain views and to enjoy the indigenous gardens and birdlife.
